As negotiations opened in Switzerland, U.S. President Donald Trump told Fox News on Sunday that he would not hesitate to resume military action if Iran does not reach an agreement. He said, “This is not a deal with the Iranian regime, it is only an extension of the ceasefire.”
Trump added that he holds the leverage in the talks and that if Iran fails to meet its commitments at the negotiating table, he has a “60-day option” and then can do “what I want.” He framed the current diplomacy as a continuation of a ceasefire rather than a standalone accord.
He also issued a direct threat over the Strait of Hormuz, saying that if Iran closes it again, “they will not have a country.” Trump said the U.S. could act as the strait’s “guardian,” control a route through which 20 percent of oil passes, and even take over the passage and collect transit fees if needed. He concluded, “If they do not make a deal, we will blow them to pieces.”
