Arab Israeli Man Convicted of Security Offenses Awaits Sentencing

Bassel Abahra, a 23-year-old from Arraba al-Batuf, has been convicted by the Haifa District Court of serious security offenses, including possessing weapons for terrorist purposes and preparing for terrorist acts. His case, which began with his arrest in August 2024, has spanned over two years of investigations and legal proceedings. The prosecution is seeking a sentence of over 25 years, while the defense argues for a lesser punishment.

Abahra was arrested in a dawn raid on his home by Israeli police and the Shin Bet security agency. The initial investigation was conducted under a security gag order. Two minors from Arraba al-Batuf were also arrested in connection with the same case in August and September 2024.

In September 2024, a security indictment was filed against Abahra and the minors in the Haifa District Court. Charges included "possession of weapons for terrorist purposes," "forming or establishing an organization," "possession of a weapon with intent to kill," and "preparing to carry out terrorist acts." Abahra's defense attorney at the time described the charges as "serious."

Authorities claimed Abahra was involved in planning an attack in the Galilee region, which allegedly would have involved explosives and shooting at Israeli targets. They also alleged he was forming a cell, monitoring targets, and received assistance from individuals in the West Bank with expertise in explosives. The alleged plan involved using explosives followed by gunfire, which authorities stated could have resulted in casualties.

The trial lasted nearly two years, with Abahra remaining in custody. His family was able to visit him face-to-face for the first time in April 2025 at Megiddo prison. His father expressed concern over his son's health and appearance during his detention.

During the sentencing phase, the prosecution requested over 25 years, citing the severity of the offenses. The defense countered that the cases cited by the prosecution involved actual bombings and casualties, unlike Abahra's case, and requested a sentence proportionate to the proven actions and circumstances.
