Palestine Resumes Football Matches in "Thousands of Martyrs Cup"
Palestinian football activities have resumed across the West Bank, Gaza, and refugee camps in Lebanon with the launch of the "Thousands of Martyrs Cup" tournament. This marks the first time matches have been played since the outbreak of the war in Gaza on October 7, 2023, which halted all sports. The tournament honors 1,014 athletes killed during the conflict, according to the Palestinian Football Association. The opening ceremony and matches took place simultaneously on Friday in various locations, including the town of Al-Ram in the West Bank and Deir al-Balah in Gaza.
Commentator Khalil Jadallah, who had spent recent years mourning fallen players, returned to his work, describing the resumption as a mix of joy and sorrow. "I spent the last years of my work mourning players whose goals I had previously celebrated," he told AFP. "There is a feeling of joy first at the return after this absence, and a feeling of loss because we have lost players, fans, administrators, and referees."
In Deir al-Balah, Gaza, the tournament kicked off despite significant destruction to sports facilities and stadiums, with some venues now housing displaced people. "Football represented life for us before the war," said Khalil Matar, a player for the "Services Rafah" team. "After the war, the lives of football players completely stopped."
The "Thousands of Martyrs Cup" features 226 teams: 146 in the West Bank, 44 in Gaza, and 36 in Lebanese refugee camps. Before the opening match in Al-Ram, a memorial was unveiled bearing the names of the athletes who died. Children carried a Palestinian flag shaped like a shroud across the field, and the Palestinian national anthem was played.
During the matches, a minute of silence was observed for the 1,014 athletes. Electronic screens displayed the Palestinian flag, images of the victims, and the tournament's name with the phrase "Football returns to Palestine." Jadallah views the resumption as a message of resilience, stating, "We are stubborn because we do not surrender, stubborn in our insistence on life despite everything in our lives telling us you cannot continue."
