Israel Expands Northern Border Fortification Program

The Israeli government is expanding the "Northern Shield" fortification program to include communities situated within nine kilometers of the Lebanese border. Under this initiative, eligible homeowners can receive grants of up to 182,000 shekels for the construction of protected spaces. Applications are slated to open on September 15.

The program will encompass 89 communities, with plans to build over 15,000 shelters. Additionally, 4.2 billion shekels will be allocated to reinforce approximately 11,000 apartments in multi-story buildings. This expansion complements the ongoing construction of about 3,000 shelters in communities within one kilometer of the border, more than half of which are already completed or nearing completion, according to the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Defense, and the Home Front Command.

The initiative aims to enhance the protection of residents in northern Israel, who have faced years of rocket and drone attacks from Hezbollah. The program's expansion is a response to the persistent security threats along the northern frontier.
