Israel Launches Northern Shield Project for Border Communities

The Prime Minister's Office announced the launch of the "Northern Shield" project, a significant initiative aimed at fortifying communities along Israel's northern border. The plan outlines three tiers of protection based on proximity to the border, with settlements within 9 kilometers eligible for substantial grants.

Families in the closest settlements, up to 9 kilometers from the border, can receive grants of up to 182,000 shekels per family starting next year. This funding is part of a total project budget of 6.75 billion shekels. Residents of 89 communities within this 9-kilometer range can apply for these grants, which will be disbursed in three installments based on construction progress. The grant amounts are time-sensitive: 182,000 shekels in 2027, decreasing to 133,000 shekels in 2028, with no grants available after 2029. Residents living within 1 kilometer of the border who have already begun or completed construction and received a lower grant are eligible for the difference, provided they submit receipts.

For the cities of Kiryat Shmona, Nahariya, and Ma'alot, which are located beyond the 9-kilometer threshold, the project will involve reinforcing and fortifying existing multi-story buildings. The Ministry of Housing will oversee this fortification, alongside accelerating urban renewal processes and establishing sub-teams to address planning and legal obstacles. These teams will be managed by the Planning Administration, Housing Ministry, and Ministry of Justice.

Lior Simcha, Secretary-General of the Kibbutz Movement, commented on the announcement, stating that while the decision is a crucial first step, the work is far from over until the entire north is secured. He emphasized the importance of diligent execution to realize the project's goals, linking a protected north to a secure Israel.
