Israel Approves $1.8 Billion Plan to Fortify Northern Border Communities

The Israeli government has approved a NIS 6.75 billion (approximately $1.8 billion) project named "Magen Tzafon" (Northern Shield) to fortify communities located up to 9 kilometers from the Lebanese border. The Prime Minister's Office announced the decision, detailing that the plan includes completing fortification within the 0-1 kilometer range of the border. For communities situated between 1 and 9 kilometers from the border, a "self-implementation" model will be adopted with updated guidelines.

Additionally, the government greenlit an increase in grants for this self-implementation approach. This includes retroactive funding for the construction of protected spaces, with families eligible to receive up to NIS 182,000 each. The initiative aims to enhance the security and resilience of residents in the northern region facing ongoing threats from Lebanon.
