Israel Approves $1.8 Billion Plan to Fortify Northern Border Communities
The Israeli government has approved a NIS 6.75 billion (approximately $1.8 billion) program called "Magen HaTzafon" (Shield of the North) aimed at protecting communities near the Lebanese border. The plan, announced by the Prime Minister's Office, focuses on settlements located within nine kilometers of the border.
The program mandates the completion of protective measures for communities situated within one kilometer of the border. For those between one and nine kilometers away, a revised scheme will allow residents to build protected spaces at their own expense, with government reimbursement. The maximum reimbursement per family has been raised to NIS 182,000.
Families who have already financed the construction of protected spaces will also be eligible for compensation under the new plan. The initiative seeks to enhance the security and resilience of northern Israeli towns and villages facing ongoing threats from across the border.
