IDF Overhauls Conscription Rules, Introduces New Medical Profile for Combat Roles

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is set to implement significant changes to its health assessment system for new recruits, aiming to expand the pool of soldiers eligible for combat roles. This reform, developed jointly by the IDF's medical corps and personnel directorate, will introduce a new medical profile, number 70.

This intermediate profile will bridge the gap between the 64 profile, which previously excluded individuals from frontline service, and the 72 profile and above, designated for combat units. Profile 70 will allow individuals with minor physical limitations to serve in operational positions, including artillery and air defense units, roles previously inaccessible to them.

The reform addresses critical personnel shortages and the urgent need to bolster combat units. Previously, hundreds of individual requests for exceptions were processed annually to allow soldiers with a 64 profile to serve in active roles. The new system aims to streamline this process by automating it and reducing bureaucratic hurdles.

This change will exclusively apply to future recruits undergoing initial enlistment procedures and will not affect current service members. The IDF's traditional medical profile scale ranges from 0 and 21 for those unfit for service, through 45 and 64 for support roles, to 72, 82, and 97 for combat positions. The introduction of profile 70 reflects a more flexible approach to meeting current security needs and utilizing the potential of motivated recruits.
