Israel Launches Pilot Program Placing Full-Time Nurses in Elementary Schools

Israel's Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education are launching a new pilot program for the upcoming school year, placing a full-time registered nurse in eight elementary schools across the country. This initiative aims to provide students with professional, ongoing, and accessible medical care during the school day, particularly benefiting children with chronic illnesses, allergies, or other medical conditions requiring supervision.

The program intends to replace the current system where students needing medical oversight rely on non-medical staff. The school nurse will be familiar with each student's medical condition and specific needs, and will also be able to train educational staff on how to provide appropriate support. In emergencies, the nurse can quickly identify the situation and administer necessary treatment.

Beyond assisting students with special medical needs, the nurse will be a permanent health professional within the school, available throughout the entire school day. Their responsibilities will include mapping student health needs, managing chronic illnesses, offering professional advice, and conducting first-aid training for staff and students. They will also be responsible for administering vaccinations and screening tests, providing first aid, and promoting health and healthy lifestyles.

The pilot will operate in eight elementary schools selected from various sectors, chosen after approximately 40 local authorities expressed interest. The experiment will last for one academic year and will be professionally monitored by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education. An academic study will simultaneously evaluate its impact and the potential for broader implementation in the future. Key metrics will include the number of medical responses provided, vaccination and screening rates, health promotion activities, first aid incidents, and satisfaction levels among parents, staff, and nurses.
