Argentina Threatens Sanctions Over Falklands Oil Drilling, Citing Israeli Involvement

Argentina's President Javier Milei has escalated a long-standing dispute with the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, announcing sanctions against oil companies involved in drilling activities north of the islands. The move comes as British firm Rockhopper Exploration and Israeli company Navitas Petroleum are set to begin further exploration in the Sea Lion oil field, estimated to hold 1.7 billion barrels of oil.

Milei declared the drilling project an "urgent threat" to Argentina's interests, calling the area "occupied British territory." He stated that allowing such operations would incentivize the UK to deepen its "occupation" and "exploitation of our resources." Argentina, which refers to the islands as the Malvinas, claims sovereignty over them, while the UK has controlled them since 1833. A 1982 war over the islands resulted in an Argentine defeat and is considered a factor in the fall of its ruling junta.

The current dispute is fueled by the potential for significant oil revenue, a prospect Argentina has contested since the field's discovery in 2010. Milei plans to introduce urgent legislation to "defend national sovereignty" and increase penalties for unauthorized activities around the islands. His administration has already initiated sanctions against 45 individuals and companies involved in the oil exploration.

Milei's assertive stance may also be influenced by signals from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has hinted at reconsidering Washington's neutrality on the sovereignty issue and potentially supporting Argentina. Trump has questioned Britain's current military capacity to defend the islands, suggesting the UK is not the same nation it was decades ago.

The UK government reiterated its unwavering position that the islands are British and will remain so, emphasizing the residents' right to self-determination. However, some internal UK voices suggest re-evaluating the costs of administering the remote territory. Meanwhile, Argentine officials maintain that the sanctions will not harm diplomatic relations with Israel, despite the Israeli involvement of Navitas Petroleum and other Israeli investors in the project.
