Oakland Cafe Accused of Antisemitism Closes Amid Federal Lawsuit

The Jerusalem Coffee House in Oakland, California, has ceased operations following accusations of antisemitism and multiple discrimination lawsuits. The Palestinian-owned cafe faced significant public backlash and legal challenges, including a major federal lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice. The lawsuit alleges the cafe violated federal civil rights laws by refusing service based on religion and national origin.

Incidents cited in the legal filings include the alleged expulsion of Michael Radis, a Jewish charity leader, who was reportedly told by the owner, "You are a Jew, a Zionist, we do not want to see you here." Another incident involved Jonathan Hirsch, who claims he and his young son were insulted and removed from the premises while the child wore a Star of David cap.

The controversy escalated around the anniversary of the October 7th attacks when the cafe introduced menu items with provocative names, such as "Sweet Sinwar" and "Iced In Tea Fada." In a statement announcing the closure, the owners denied the allegations, characterizing the lawsuit as political persecution and an attempt by federal authorities, alongside the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the Brandeis Center, to stifle free speech and support for Palestine.

The owners stated the closure is to prepare for an upcoming trial scheduled for October 26th and have appealed to supporters for financial assistance. This case follows previous reports of rising antisemitism in the United States.
