Hamilton Lane Executive: Private Markets Offer Strong Future Investment Potential
Reiner Kobler, Head of Private Wealth Management at Hamilton Lane Switzerland, stated at a Globes conference that private markets, once considered complex and inaccessible, are now a key investment avenue with strong long-term performance. He noted that Hamilton Lane has made these markets accessible to Israeli investors, mirroring their approach in Canada, the US, Australia, and Switzerland.
Hamilton Lane, founded in 1991 and listed on NASDAQ in 2017, is a global leader in private market investments, managing over a trillion dollars. The firm invests $30-40 billion annually in leading global funds and companies across various sectors. Kobler emphasized that their access to top-tier deals provides clients with unique opportunities not available in public markets.
The firm has had a presence in Israel for about 20 years, investing approximately $1.4 billion in the Israeli economy, particularly in high-tech companies. Since October 2023, Hamilton Lane has invested an additional $470 million in Israel, expressing confidence in the country's market and innovative spirit.
Kobler explained the shift towards private markets by citing the decline in the number of publicly traded companies in the US and the fact that a significant portion of value creation occurs before companies go public. He used SpaceX as an example, suggesting earlier investment at a lower valuation would have been more beneficial than investing after an IPO. He also highlighted the reduced market concentration risk compared to public markets dominated by a few large companies.
Addressing the complexity of private market investing, Kobler pointed out the wide performance gaps between fund managers, making the selection of the right manager crucial. He also stressed the importance of portfolio construction. Hamilton Lane has been instrumental in making private markets accessible to Israeli institutional investors since 2005, managing around $9 billion for them. To cater to individual investors, they pioneered "evergreen" funds, lowering minimum investment thresholds and offering greater liquidity compared to traditional structures.
Kobler concluded by reiterating Hamilton Lane's commitment to continued investment in Israel, driven by belief in Israeli entrepreneurship and innovation. The firm manages approximately $20 billion in evergreen funds globally.
