US Races to Develop High-Power Lasers Amid Israel's Operational Lead
While American defense giant Lockheed Martin is testing advanced laser systems with unprecedented power levels, Israel currently holds a significant operational lead in deploying such technology. Lockheed Martin CEO Jim Taiclet revealed the company is conducting live-fire tests of 300-kilowatt laser systems against drones and cruise missiles, with a goal of reaching 500 kilowatts. This development comes as Lockheed Martin secured a major contract from the U.S. Department of Defense for the Joint Directed Energy Defensive Systems (JLWS) program, aiming to develop a mobile, modular 500-kilowatt laser system housed in a standard shipping container.
The accelerated arms race in directed energy weapons is attributed to lessons learned from conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. The U.S. Army's IFPC-HEL program has already demonstrated 300-kilowatt systems capable of interception. The 500-kilowatt target is intended to counter more challenging threats like cruise missiles and drone swarms at extended ranges. The U.S. Navy has experimentally deployed lower-power systems, around 60 kilowatts, on destroyers in the Red Sea and Persian Gulf.
Despite the U.S. focus on developing significantly more powerful lasers, Israel is recognized for its current operational readiness and deployment. The first operational laser system of its kind has already been delivered to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and is undergoing integration. This system is a product of collaboration between Israel's Ministry of Defense's Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D), Rafael, Elbit Systems, and the IDF.
Israel's advantage lies in its rapid and cost-effective implementation of laser defense, exemplified by systems like Rafael's Iron Beam. The U.S., conversely, leverages its substantial budget and industrial capacity to push the technological boundaries. The two nations are cooperating closely, with Rafael and Lockheed Martin collaborating on a version of Israel's "Sky Dew" system for the American market. This partnership creates a complementary race, where Israel focuses on immediate deployment and the U.S. drives cutting-edge technological advancement.
