Astronaut Eitan Steibel's Son Leads Successful Water Projects in India
Amit Steibel, son of veteran businessman and astronaut Eitan Steibel, has become a significant figure in India's water infrastructure development through his company, VCE Environment. Despite his father's initial reservations about entering the Indian market, Amit pursued the venture, transforming the father-son business relationship into an entrepreneur-investor dynamic.
Amit's work in India is set to provide safe drinking water to approximately 3 million people in remote areas by the end of the year. This success contrasts with Eitan Steibel's own past attempts to invest in India's water sector, which, despite support from the World Bank, ultimately failed due to remote American management issues. Eitan attributes his son's success partly to India's market reforms under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which have opened up opportunities for foreign ownership and standardized taxation.
Eitan Steibel, known for being the second Israeli astronaut after Ilan Ramon and for his participation in the 'Rakia' mission to the International Space Station in October 2022, shared insights into his family's approach to business and risk-taking. He highlighted that while he invested in the risky space sector, his son's focus on essential infrastructure like water in India demonstrates a different, yet equally valuable, form of calculated risk.
The Steibel family emphasizes open communication about all aspects of their business dealings, including failures and successes, a practice they extended to their children from a young age. Eitan also drew parallels between his space mission, which involved international cooperation in a challenging environment, and the need for collaboration in addressing global issues like water scarcity.
