Blind Runner to be Guided by 5-Year-Old in Beer Sheva Race

A unique pairing will capture attention at next Wednesday's "Light Run" in Beer Sheva, where thousands are expected to participate in various distances, including a half-marathon. Lior Maharbani, a 49-year-old blind runner from Beer Sheva, will compete in the shortest 500-meter race accompanied by 5-year-old Nevo Arush.

Maharbani, who has completed races including a full marathon in Venice, relies on sighted guides to navigate. This time, his guide will be Nevo, who is not an experienced runner but is eager to participate. The connection between them was facilitated by the "Kesher Ein Alah Wiener Israel" running club, which pairs blind and visually impaired runners with volunteers. Nevo's father, Matan Arush, volunteers as a guide for blind runners.

Maharbani explained that the biggest challenge for blind runners is trusting a sighted guide. He emphasized that this run, despite the age difference, is being conducted responsibly, with Nevo's father present and assisting during training runs and expected to be nearby during the race. Maharbani stated the primary goal is to raise awareness about joint running for both the blind and sighted communities, demonstrating that visually impaired individuals can run and encouraging sighted people to volunteer as guides.

The idea originated with Nevo, who expressed a desire to run with a blind person, inspired by his father's volunteer work. Maharbani, who had previously spoken to Nevo's kindergarten class about blindness, readily agreed to be Nevo's running partner. Nevo himself is excited about the experience, having trained with Maharbani using a special tether and practicing navigation cues.
