Jafar Farah Resignation Expected, Samir Abu Zeid Tapped as Successor

The Democratic Front for Peace and Equality (DFPE) secretariat met in Shfaram on Saturday evening to address a crisis concerning the second position on the party's upcoming election list, following the announcement by Jafar Farah, director of the "MUSAWA" center, that he is withdrawing his candidacy for that spot. The meeting concluded with an agreement to nominate Samir Abu Zeid from Eilaboun as the sole candidate for the second position, pending Farah's formal written resignation. Abu Zeid's candidacy will then be presented to the DFPE's general council for final approval.

Simultaneously, a protest was held outside the meeting venue in Shfaram, reflecting internal debate over how to fill the vacant second position and which body has the authority to select a replacement. The situation arose after several candidates initially expressed interest in the second spot, but most subsequently withdrew their nominations throughout the day, leaving Abu Zeid as the only remaining contender.

Lawyer Hussein Mannaa emphasized that the Shfaram meeting was not authorized to elect a replacement, stating that only the DFPE's general council, which initially elected the list, has the constitutional and organizational authority to approve candidates. Therefore, the consensus on Abu Zeid represents an agreement on a name to be proposed, not a final election.

One supporter of Jafar Farah reportedly raised objections during the meeting, warning that failure to adhere to the DFPE's constitution and organizational procedures could lead to legal action. This underscores the procedural complexities surrounding the selection process, with the general council being the ultimate decision-making body.

The agreed-upon path forward requires Farah to submit his resignation in writing, after which Abu Zeid's candidacy will be put to a vote by the DFPE's general council.
