New Candidate Chosen for Hadash Party's Knesset List After Predecessor's Exit

Samir Abu Zeid has been elected to the second position on the Hadash party's list for the Knesset, following the unexpected withdrawal of Jaafar Farah. The election took place hastily in Shfaram, just two days before the deadline for submitting candidate lists.

Farah, who had initially secured the second spot four months prior, announced his resignation on Friday, citing a "sense of responsibility" and support for the joint list. His decision reportedly came after facing significant pressure due to allegations of sexual harassment and a campaign calling for his removal. Farah also experienced a health issue, being hospitalized on Thursday after feeling unwell.

Five candidates vied for the position, including Nasreen Murkus, secretary of the Democratic Women's Movement in Israel, and attorney Sari Huria, Hadash secretary in Shfaram, who was previously arrested on suspicion of identifying with Hamas. Former head of the Kfar Yasif local council, attorney Shadi Shwary, also initially ran but withdrew his candidacy shortly before the vote.

Outside the election venue, dozens of Farah's supporters protested his withdrawal, claiming injustice to him and the democratic process. Despite stepping down from the Knesset race, Farah stated his intention to continue his political and social activism for Hadash and the joint list. His resignation was reportedly coordinated with party leadership to "thwart attempts to undermine the joint list by exploiting accusations against member Abu Basel," which Farah vehemently denies.
