Rehovot Identified as Key Indicator City for Israeli Election Outcomes
An analysis by the company Madlan has identified Rehovot as the Israeli city whose election results most accurately reflect the national outcome, according to a report by Ynet. The study, conducted less than two months before the October 27th Knesset elections, examined voting patterns in 2022 from Israeli cities with populations over 50,000.
Rehovot emerged as the top indicator city, with its 2022 vote distribution closely mirroring national results. This similarity is attributed to its demographic profile, which closely matches the national average, with a minimal Arab population and thus limited support for Arab parties. For instance, in 2022, the Likud party received 25.7% of the vote in Rehovot, compared to 23.4% nationwide. Yesh Atid garnered 23.1% in Rehovot versus 17.8% nationally, and Religious Zionism received 13% compared to 10.6% nationally.
Other cities showing similar predictive accuracy include Petah Tikva, Haifa, Hadera, Netanya, Holon, and Rosh Ha'ayin. Petah Tikva ranked second, with Likud receiving 28.4% and Yesh Atid 19.7%. Haifa was noted as the only city in the top ten where Yesh Atid surpassed Likud, receiving 20.9% to Likud's 26.3%, and also showed higher support for Hadash-Ta'al.
Cities at the lower end of the indicator ranking were predominantly ultra-Orthodox and Arab communities. Conversely, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv showed significantly different voting patterns from the national trend. In Jerusalem, United Torah Judaism led, and Shas received 2.5 times more votes than Yesh Atid. Tel Aviv saw Yesh Atid nearly double Likud's vote share, with Meretz almost securing third place.
The study encompassed 41 Israeli cities with populations exceeding 50,000. This analysis follows previous reporting by "Cursor" on a sociological study indicating shifts in Israeli voter preferences, with new political forces gaining ground and altering the balance of power between the coalition and opposition in the Knesset.
