Iran Launches Drones at Merchant Ships in the Strait of Hormuz After U.S. Deal Announcement

Iran fired several drones toward commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz after the memorandum of understanding with the United States was signed on Sunday. According to the report, U.S. forces intercepted every drone before any threat emerged to commercial vessels or to U.S. military or civilian crew members.

An American official told NBC that the drones were launched by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The official added that the U.S. military is continuing to coordinate with shipping companies to protect vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

The incident came as Iranian state media praised what it called a diplomatic breakthrough with the United States and described it as a major victory for Tehran after Donald Trump said on Sunday that a peace agreement had been reached. Iranian officials boasted that they had forced Washington to bring a long-running conflict to an end and portrayed the development as a win for the Islamic Republic.

In a broadcast after the announcement, the Iranian side said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran has officially forced the American-Zionist enemy to end the war on all fronts.”
