Israel Returns Five Detained Lebanese Citizens to Beirut

Five Lebanese detainees held in Israel have been transferred to Lebanon through the mediation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The ICRC announced that one Lebanese national was handed over on Thursday, with the remaining four transferred on Friday, September 4th. The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that as part of ongoing negotiations with Lebanon, Netanyahu had ordered intensified efforts to locate and recover the remains of Jewish community leaders abducted and killed by terrorist organizations in Lebanon in the mid-1980s. According to the Prime Minister's office, Israel and Lebanon have undertaken several search operations in recent months, including on-site investigations, to find the remains of these 12 individuals who were killed approximately 40 years ago. Israeli hostage and missing persons coordinator, Gal Hirsch, has been leading this effort, reportedly presenting maps and diagrams to Lebanese representatives during negotiations in Rome, according to i24News. Prime Minister Netanyahu had tasked Hirsch with raising the issue with Lebanese officials early in the talks. Israel subsequently provided intelligence, including maps, aerial photographs, and other data, indicating potential burial sites. Despite search efforts, the remains have not been found. Against this backdrop, the decision was made to release the five Lebanese citizens detained in areas of Southern Lebanon under IDF control. Following investigations, it was determined that these individuals were not affiliated with terrorist organizations, had not engaged in terrorist activities, and there were no grounds for their continued detention in Israel.
