Court Questions Police After Detainee Claims Brutal Beating

A 21-year-old Palestinian man from the village of 'Aqrabah, near Nablus, who was arrested for illegal entry into Israel and a break-in at a Tel Aviv wine bar, appeared in court with significant facial injuries and damaged teeth. He claims police beat him severely after his arrest and has filed a complaint with the Police Internal Investigations Department (Mahash). The man faces charges including illegal presence in Israel, property damage, and burglary, stemming from an alleged incident where he and another individual broke into a wine bar, stole two Apple laptops valued at approximately $1,100, and were apprehended shortly after with the stolen goods. The suspect admitted to entering Israel without a permit but denied the burglary, stating he found the items on the street. The prosecution sought his remand until the end of proceedings, citing his alleged dangerousness and flight risk, though noting he has no prior criminal record. During the remand hearing, discrepancies arose between the police's account of the arrest and the suspect's condition. Police stated a struggle ensued when the suspect resisted arrest, leading to a fall. However, his lawyer presented medical documentation showing a fractured jaw, damaged teeth, and a need for a liquid diet for six weeks, asserting the suspect was beaten by officers. Judge Binyamin Hershel Doron noted the difficulty in reconciling the police reports with the medical evidence, particularly the severity of the injuries. He questioned the lack of body camera footage in the police report. Considering the suspect's lack of prior offenses and his medical state, the judge ordered his release on bail, rejecting the police's request for a stay of release. The Israel Police stated that the suspect, an illegal resident, was arrested in the act and that allegations of excessive force have been reported to Mahash as per protocol.
