Russian sailors fired warning shots toward a civilian yacht that approached a Russian warship in the English Channel, near British territorial waters, Reuters reported on Tuesday. The British Defense Ministry said it is investigating reports of an incident in the channel, and no injuries were reported.
According to a source familiar with the incident, the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich was involved and was being monitored at the time by a Royal Navy vessel. A UK-registered yacht said the warning shots were fired from about 500 yards, or 457 meters, away.
The incident took place about 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight, outside Britain’s territorial waters. The report did not say why the yacht came close to the Russian vessel or what happened afterward.
