IDF Admits Training Exercise on Shabbat Lacked Operational Need

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has concluded that a company-level training exercise conducted by the Rotem Battalion of the Givati Brigade in the Gaza Strip last month lacked operational necessity. The IDF investigation, prompted by complaints from soldiers, found that the exercise, which took place on Saturday, August 8, was not brought to the attention of the brigade's rabbi. Following these findings, the company commander has been summoned for a debriefing with the Givati Brigade commander.

Soldiers from the battalion's yeshiva student department claimed the exercise, which involved evacuating casualties and opening an IV line, was not essential and therefore should not have been performed on Shabbat. They reportedly consulted a military rabbi who agreed it was forbidden. The IDF stated that after the exercise and in light of the soldiers' claims, it was determined there was no operational reason for the training on Shabbat and that the brigade rabbi was not informed.

The IDF added that the incident was investigated, leading to a command discussion within the battalion to learn lessons. "The approval of the exercise harmed the soldiers' way of life. The battalion commanders discussed the matter with the company commander and clarified his mistake and future conduct. Additionally, the company commander was summoned for a debriefing with the Givati Brigade commander following the incident," the IDF said.

This exercise preceded another crisis within the battalion approximately a week and a half later, when religious soldiers refused to participate in an operational activity involving an Namer armored personnel carrier and a paramedic. Three soldiers initially refused, followed by others from the same department. The activity was canceled due to the refusal. Subsequently, five Rotem Battalion soldiers, including hesder yeshiva students, were sentenced to ten days in military prison, and eleven others received five-day sentences. Two of the soldiers sentenced to ten days were required to undergo an assessment committee before returning to combat.

The Council of Hesder Yeshivas supported the soldiers, arguing their refusal was linked to prior events and a "crisis of trust with direct command" stemming from alleged disregard for Halakha and orders. The council also criticized the harsh punishments, deeming them disproportionate to the full picture.
