IDF Admits Training Exercise Held on Shabbat Lacked Operational Necessity

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has officially confirmed that a company training exercise involving the "Rotem" battalion of the Givati Brigade, which took place on a Saturday, lacked operational necessity. The IDF acknowledged that the exercise, which included simulated casualty evacuation and intravenous procedures, "harmed the soldiers' way of life" and that its approval "did not reach the brigade chaplain." This admission comes after soldiers from the battalion claimed in recent interviews that the incident preceded and contributed to a crisis of confidence between them and their commanders.

The soldiers alleged that the company commander decided to hold the training on Shabbat about a week and a half before the separate "Namer" (armored personnel carrier) incident, in which 15 soldiers were jailed for refusing to board a vehicle carrying a medic. They stated there was no urgent operational need for the exercise on the Sabbath and requested it be postponed. According to the soldiers, they approached the brigade chaplain after the Shabbat, who reportedly agreed that the exercise should not have been conducted without operational justification.

The IDF confirmed the exercise took place in the Gaza Strip area on August 8, 2026. Following the soldiers' claims, an investigation found no operational reason for the training to occur on Shabbat and that the brigade chaplain was not informed. The IDF stated the incident was reviewed, leading to command discussions and lessons learned within the battalion. The company commander was reprimanded by battalion commanders and summoned for a clarification with the Givati Brigade commander.

The soldiers' claims suggest the Shabbat exercise was part of ongoing tensions with commanders over religious issues and the joint service order, which they felt culminated in the Namer incident. The IDF's confirmation validates their assertion that the exercise was unnecessary and improperly scheduled, impacting their observance and routine.
