Rabbi Contrasts Jewish Texts With Scientific Findings on Extraterrestrial Life

Rabbi Sharabi reportedly responded with certainty that no life would be found on the moon or elsewhere, attributing this to the Zohar, which he interpreted as describing the creation of flora, fauna, and humans specifically on Earth. Rabbi Cohen clarifies that this is not an explicit statement from the Zohar but an interpretation upon which Rabbi Sharabi relied.
Rabbi Cohen emphasizes the intricate conditions required for life, citing Jupiter's role as a protective shield against celestial bodies and Earth's atmosphere containing approximately 21% oxygen, a level crucial for breathing and preventing excessive fire risk. He also points to the process of photosynthesis and Earth's distance from the sun, about 150 million kilometers, as examples of delicate balances that enable life as we know it.
According to Rabbi Cohen, an increasing number of scientists are acknowledging the complex interplay of conditions necessary for life's formation and existence. He mentions reading an article by an self-proclaimed atheist who, due to the immense complexity required for life's emergence, was reconsidering some of his assumptions. Rabbi Cohen views these scientific findings not as contradictions to the Torah, but as complementary to the picture presented by Jewish sources, suggesting that observing the stars and Earth's unique conditions reinforces biblical verses about wisdom and understanding.
