Rabbi Shternbuch's 'Thousand Protectors' Campaign Nears Goal for Torah Scholars

A significant fundraising initiative led by Rabbi Mordechai Shternbuch, a prominent rabbinic authority, is approaching its target of enlisting 1,000 "partners" to support Torah scholars. The campaign, named 'Elef Hamagen' (Thousand Protectors), aims to raise funds to sustain yeshiva students and open new institutions amidst financial challenges facing the world of religious study in Israel. The initiative is in its final days, with only 98 spots remaining to join the group of supporters.

Supporters who contribute 3,000 shekels (approximately $810) are granted the opportunity to meet Rabbi Shternbuch, present their donation, and receive a personal blessing for the upcoming Jewish year. Those unable to attend in person will also receive the rabbi's blessing and a special "protective coin" blessed by him, intended to bring safeguarding and prosperity. The campaign has already successfully enrolled 902 partners, enabling the acceptance of over 100 new students and the establishment of two new yeshiva programs for the upcoming Elul term.

The campaign was launched in response to "economic decrees" impacting Torah institutions, particularly the cancellation of tax benefits for donations under section 46 of Israeli tax law. Rabbi Shternbuch has expressed deep concern over the situation, emphasizing the importance of supporting Torah study even when facing financial difficulties, adopting a stance of "They say 'lest it multiply,' we say 'so shall it multiply.'"

Supporters can join the 'Elef Hamagen' program through a monthly standing order of 84 shekels (approximately $23) for 36 months, securing full partnership and the rabbi's blessings. The campaign emphasizes the urgency of joining before the final slots are filled, particularly during the current period leading up to the High Holy Days.
