FBI Disrupts Hamas Digital Network, Seizes Crypto, Gains Donor Data
The U.S. Department of Justice announced on September 1st that the FBI has successfully infiltrated Hamas's financial and internet infrastructure, seizing over $560,000 in cryptocurrency and gaining access to data on thousands of individuals who attempted to contact or donate to the organization. This operation, the result of a lengthy investigation combining human intelligence, blockchain analysis, and court orders, targeted Hamas's use of encrypted online channels and cryptocurrency for fundraising.
Hamas and its military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, utilized special websites to solicit donations via cryptocurrency, with addresses changing frequently to obscure transactions and create a false sense of anonymity. However, U.S. investigators were able to trace these funds on the blockchain, linking specific wallets to Hamas's fundraising system. The FBI stated that individuals within the network provided crucial information connecting the digital infrastructure, crypto addresses, and fundraising organizers.
The seized $560,000 in cryptocurrency was recovered under three court orders issued between March and October 2025, indicating the operation spanned over a year. This seizure is part of a larger effort, as U.S. authorities previously confiscated approximately $201,400 in crypto in March 2025 from the same financial infrastructure, which they claim has handled over $1.5 million since October 2024.
Beyond financial assets, the FBI gained control of domains and servers used by Hamas's military wing, including its main website, AlQassam.ps. This control allows investigators not only to disable the sites but also to intercept related financial transaction attempts, study the system's operators, users, and intended recipients, and use this intelligence for future investigations.
Potentially more significant than the seized funds is the intelligence gathered on thousands of individuals who attempted to connect with Hamas online and make donations. This data provides investigators with a list of potential contacts, offering a foundation for further counter-terrorism efforts. The FBI intends to leverage this information in its ongoing work against terrorism.
The operation highlights the evolving challenges in combating terrorist financing, as cryptocurrency, while offering a way to bypass traditional banking, leaves a traceable digital footprint. The U.S. strategy is shifting from prosecuting individuals post-crime to dismantling the infrastructure that enables terrorist organizations like Hamas to raise funds, recruit supporters, and maintain international contacts. This is part of a broader campaign following the October 7, 2023 attacks, demonstrating the FBI's capability to penetrate digital infrastructure and track illicit financial activities.
