Israel Steps Up Airport Checks, Detains Draft-Dodgers Ahead of High Holidays

Israeli authorities at Ben Gurion Airport have detained six young men who are subject to military conscription and were attempting to leave the country. The individuals were stopped at Terminals 1 and 3 after the Population and Immigration Authority discovered active exit-ban orders against them. This incident follows a series of detentions of dozens of Breslov Hasidim in recent weeks at the airport and the Taba border crossing. These individuals, despite existing conscription orders, attempted to leave Israel to reach Rosh Hashanah prayers in Uman, Ukraine.

In anticipation of the heavy travel expected during the High Holidays (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur), security has been heightened at Ben Gurion Airport. The Israel Defense Forces, the Ministry of Transportation, and the Population and Immigration Authority have implemented a joint plan to increase oversight and close loopholes. The goal is to prevent draft dodgers and deserters from exploiting the significant passenger congestion to leave the country illegally.

The intensified checks at exit points are part of a special preparation by the Ministry of Transportation, the Immigration Authority, and the IDF for the holiday travel rush. The joint program has increased staffing at the terminals to prevent individuals who have not regularized their military status from using the crowds to board flights.

This wave of attempted departures and subsequent arrests has also prompted an internal response within the Breslov Hasidic community. Spiritual leaders have released a recorded message urging followers not to come to Ben Gurion Airport or to attempt superficial compliance with recruitment offices solely to temporarily lift exit bans.
