Magen David Adom Urges Safety Measures for Students Returning to School

As the new school year begins on September 1st, Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel's national emergency medical service, is issuing a public safety appeal to parents and drivers. The return to school disrupts daily routines, particularly for children traveling to and from educational institutions, prompting MDA to emphasize crucial safety precautions.

A primary concern highlighted by MDA is the prevention of children being accidentally left behind in locked vehicles. To mitigate this risk, MDA advises drivers to place essential items like a handbag or mobile phone in the back seat, near the child's car seat. This practice serves as a reminder for the driver to check the back seat before exiting the vehicle. Drivers of school transport are specifically instructed to thoroughly inspect their vehicles after each trip and adhere to all established safety regulations.

MDA also reminds parents to ensure children are adequately hydrated throughout the school day, encouraging them to drink water regularly and be mindful of sun safety. For children with allergies, parents must confirm they carry an EpiPen at all times, as prescribed by their doctor.

To enhance emergency response capabilities, MDA recommends installing its 'MDA Sheli' application on children's mobile phones. This app allows a child to summon an ambulance with a single button press, even if they do not know the emergency number 101. The application automatically transmits the child's precise location to MDA dispatchers and responding teams, enabling faster assistance, especially if the child cannot communicate their whereabouts.

MDA also reiterated that emergency medical assistance begins during the initial phone call to 101, with dispatchers providing instructions while an ambulance is dispatched. MDA Director-General Eli Bin stressed the importance of adhering to safety rules for children's well-being and urged parents, educators, and students to review road safety guidelines and Home Front Command recommendations for emergencies to prevent tragedies. MDA extended wishes for a successful and safe academic year to all Israeli schoolchildren.
