Israeli Police Re-examine Jerusalem Murder Case After 18 Months

Eighteen months after the murder of Anastasia Orlova in Jerusalem, Israeli police have assigned a second investigative team to re-examine the case, Ynet reported on Wednesday, September 2. Despite interviewing over 100 witnesses and conducting investigations in multiple countries, investigators have yet to achieve a breakthrough in the 38-year-old mother's death.

The new team will review all collected testimonies and evidence, aiming to approach the unsolved case from a fresh perspective and identify any overlooked details or potential leads. The original investigative unit from the Jerusalem District Police's Central Investigation Division will continue to oversee the case.

Orlova was found dead in her apartment in the Kiryat Yovel neighborhood of Jerusalem on January 17, 2025. Initially suspected to be a suicide, further examination raised questions, prompting police to investigate it as a homicide. The case was initially handled by the Moriah police station before being transferred to the Central Investigation Division.

Over the past year and a half, police have gathered testimony from over 100 individuals, explored numerous theories, and conducted investigations abroad. Police cited the crime scene's complexity and undisclosed evidence as challenges. An independent group also investigated Orlova's death without success.

Court-issued gag orders have restricted information release in the case, allowing for discreet investigative actions. It is known that Orlova had reported domestic violence four times prior to her death and had been offered shelter, which she did not take. The "Women's Lobby in Israel" organization indicated that her partner was suspected of her murder.

Orlova, a mother of a young child, worked in the cardiology department at Hadassah Hospital and held advanced degrees in healthcare systems. Friends remembered her as an animal lover and volunteer. Commander of the Jerusalem District Police, Avshalom Peled, regularly convenes meetings on unsolved murders, including Orlova's case, to assess progress and future investigative steps.
