Russia Secretly Aided Iran in Developing Supersonic Cruise Missiles
A secret Russian program, codenamed C430L, began in 2023 to assist Iran in developing advanced supersonic cruise missile technology, according to a Financial Times investigation. Russian missile experts were reportedly sent to Iran multiple times, with the collaboration continuing in recent months, aiming to help Tehran bridge a significant gap in its armament capabilities.
The cooperation focused on developing ramjet propulsion systems, a technology enabling cruise missiles to fly at several times the speed of sound. These missiles combine high speed with low-altitude flight, significantly reducing the reaction time for air and missile defense systems. Key figures mentioned include Alexander Dragachev, a deputy head at NPO Mashinostroyeniya, and Alexander Chebkov, an expert in air-breathing propulsion systems. Vladislav Kuzmichev from Rosoboronexport reportedly negotiated with Iran's Ministry of Defense.
While Iran has long sought to develop supersonic cruise missiles through various means, there is no evidence yet that a Russian-assisted supersonic cruise missile has entered operational service. The development of ramjet-based weapons is highly complex, with only a few nations possessing the necessary expertise.
