Protest Erupts Over IDF Soldiers Jailed for Refusing Mission With Female Medic

Dozens of protesters gathered outside Prison 10 on Monday to support 16 soldiers from the Givati Brigade's Rotem Battalion who were sentenced to jail time. The soldiers, who are students at Hesder Yeshivas, refused to board an armored personnel carrier during an operational mission in the Gaza Strip because a female paramedic was present.

The incident occurred last Wednesday night during a patrol mission. Upon learning of the paramedic's presence, the soldiers consulted their rabbi and subsequently informed their commanders that they would not board the vehicle, citing religious reasons and modesty concerns, which they stated conflicted with their beliefs and the IDF's proper integration directive. The mission was canceled as a result.

Following the refusal, the battalion commander held a disciplinary hearing on Sunday. Five soldiers deemed most active in the refusal were sentenced to 10 days in military prison, with two facing a review board for their continued combat service. Eleven other soldiers who supported their comrades and stated they would not replace them received five-day sentences.

The IDF stated that refusal of orders during an operation is a serious offense and that disciplinary actions were taken accordingly. The military added that it views disobedience severely, especially during operational activity, and that the measures taken corresponded to each soldier's involvement.

The incident sparked public outcry, with political figures and rabbis calling for consideration of the soldiers' way of life. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich fully backed the soldiers, urging the military to address the issue to maintain public trust. Protesters emphasized the need for religious soldiers to serve in environments that respect their faith, particularly amid discussions about increasing Haredi enlistment.
