Far-Right MK Accuses IDF of Abandoning Soldiers Over Religious Beliefs

Avihai Maoz, chairman of the Noam party and a Member of Knesset, has strongly criticized the IDF's disciplinary actions against soldiers from the Givaty Brigade's Rotem Battalion. Maoz stated that the army is "turning its back" on these soldiers, particularly those who reportedly refused to board a Namer armored personnel carrier with a female paramedic.

Maoz argued that the punishment meted out to these "outstanding soldiers" is inconsistent with the military's calls for Haredi men to enlist. He asserted that the soldiers, who risked their lives in Lebanon, are now being penalized for their desire to live according to their religious beliefs during their military service.

"Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, this is on your watch. You are turning your back on IDF soldiers," Maoz declared, addressing the military and government leadership. He specifically mentioned the Rotem Battalion soldiers, emphasizing their past bravery in Lebanon and their current perceived abandonment by the army.

Maoz further contended that it is unacceptable for the army to simultaneously urge Haredim to join the military while punishing exemplary soldiers who wish to adhere to their faith. He urged the soldiers to maintain their pride, even if it leads to imprisonment, encouraging them to "do so with heads held high and Jewish pride. Free to be Jewish."
