Hesder Yeshivas Union Criticizes IDF Over Mixed-Gender Service Incident

The Hesder Yeshivas Union has sharply criticized the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) following an incident in the Givati Brigade's Rotem Battalion, where 16 soldiers were disciplined for refusing to board an armored personnel carrier (APC) that contained female soldiers and a female paramedic. The union stated that the soldiers' refusal was not an isolated event but a result of a systemic failure and a "severe trust crisis" between soldiers and their commanders.

In a detailed letter to rabbis and students, the union argued that the soldiers, described as "Torah-observant fighters," are forced to confront daily situations involving mixed-gender service that conflict with Halakha (Jewish law) and their spiritual world, and which violate the IDF's joint service directive. They warned that soldiers are repeatedly placed in an "impossible conflict" between their faith and their loyalty to the army, which harms both the soldiers and the IDF.

The union emphasized the need for mutual trust, where commanders understand their soldiers and reflect reality accurately. They called for prioritizing the adherence to joint service orders by commanders and ensuring that religiously observant soldiers can serve according to their beliefs. The letter also noted that the soldiers' refusal stemmed from a lack of adherence to Halakha and orders, coupled with misrepresentation of the situation to the soldiers by command.

The incident occurred in the Gaza Strip during operational activity. Three soldiers initially refused to board the APC. When asked if anyone else would join the female paramedic, the soldiers claim no one agreed. The battalion rabbi reportedly approved the mission's continuation due to its operational importance, despite the soldiers' objections.

Five soldiers were sentenced to 10 days in military prison, and 11 others received five-day sentences. Two of the soldiers sentenced to 10 days will face an evaluation board before being allowed to return to combat duty. The Hesder Yeshivas Union called on the IDF to thoroughly investigate the matter and address the "deep deficiencies" in order adherence and force buildup, urging immediate action to rectify the situation.
