Hesder Yeshivas Union Warns of Trust Crisis in IDF Over Mixed-Gender Combat

The Union of Hesder Yeshivas has issued a statement addressing an incident where three Hesder Yeshiva students serving in the Givati Brigade refused to participate in an operational mission alongside female soldiers, leading to their 10-day military jail sentence. The union stated that they had tried to prevent such an event, citing the ongoing reality of "Torah-observant soldiers" facing daily integration with female soldiers in conditions they deem contrary to Halakha (Jewish law) and their spiritual world, and not in compliance with the joint service order. This situation, they argue, led to the "unfortunate incident" in the Givati Brigade.

According to the union, Hesder Yeshiva rabbis had previously warned about violations of the joint service order and the IDF's personnel policies. They contend that soldiers are repeatedly forced to choose between their faith and their loyalty to the army, creating an "impossible conflict" detrimental to both the soldiers and the IDF. However, the union also stressed that soldiers must trust their commanders and obey orders, especially in operational situations, provided those orders have been approved by relevant authorities and the military rabbinate.

The union acknowledged the soldiers involved were from an "outstanding company" that fought bravely, with some sustaining injuries. They noted that this unit had also navigated the complex reality of mixed-gender service. The union suggested that even if the soldiers made a mistake in their decision, it should not be viewed as an isolated event but rather as a consequence of the challenging general reality.

Furthermore, the union revealed that their investigation indicated a prior "trust crisis" between the soldiers and their direct command. This crisis, they claim, stemmed from a failure to adhere to Halakha and orders, coupled with misrepresentation to the soldiers, significantly contributing to their decision. The union urged the IDF to thoroughly investigate and address such issues with the seriousness they deserve.

Given the complexity of the situation, the union criticized the "harsh punishment" meted out to the soldiers, stating it was disproportionate to the broader picture revealed by their investigation. The statement concluded by commending the students for their bravery on the battlefield and their dedication to maintaining the sanctity of the military camp.
