Nicotine Smuggling Attempt to Gaza Foiled at Kerem Shalom Crossing
An attempt to smuggle liquid nicotine into the Gaza Strip was thwarted on Sunday at the Kerem Shalom crossing. Smugglers attempted to conceal approximately 100 bottles of a soft drink, believed to be the brand "Tepuzina," filled with liquid nicotine. The contraband was discovered by the Crossings Authority inspection personnel.
The truck carrying the disguised nicotine was part of a shipment approved for entry into Gaza as humanitarian aid, purchased by an Israeli company under the private sector aid mechanism. The truck and its entire contents were confiscated and handed over to customs and other authorized bodies for further investigation.
In response to the incident, Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) Major General Yoram Levy ordered an immediate freeze on the company's authorization to bring aid into Gaza until further notice. This follows a similar incident last week where drugs were smuggled into Gaza concealed within canned peppers, also under the guise of humanitarian aid. In that case, the organization World Central Kitchen (WCK) found approximately 600 grams of hashish and other prohibited substances.
