Content Creator Finds True Freedom by Disconnecting Phone on Shabbat

Content creator Nimrod Ron, co-founder and CEO of the startup 'Callers,' has shared his profound experience of disconnecting his mobile phone during Shabbat for two consecutive weeks. Ron, who previously made Forbes' list of promising young people, explained that while he had long strived to avoid working on Shabbat, this deliberate digital detox offered a new perspective.

He described the experience as a day where he could "stop being available to the world," a significant shift for someone leading a company with employees, clients, and investors. Ron admitted his initial struggle, noting his hand would automatically reach for his phone during idle moments, a habit formed from a constant need to be connected and avoid missing out.

The most striking realization for Ron was how the disconnection enhanced his presence in everyday activities. He felt more engaged during meals and walks, experiencing a level of mindfulness he hadn't felt in a long time. This newfound presence, he stated, allowed him to be more available to his wife, family, and for rest.

Ron redefined his understanding of freedom, moving from the ability to "do what I want when I want" to also embracing "the ability not to do. And not to know. And not to be accessible." He found that the quietude fostered a deeper connection to his immediate surroundings and relationships.

Perhaps the most impactful outcome was the effect the Shabbat disconnection had on his work week. Ron reported that after the first Shabbat off his phone, he experienced a more "abundant" week with increased opportunities and previously stalled projects suddenly moving forward. He concluded that disconnecting did not lead to missed opportunities but rather the opposite, attributing the positive shift to his faith and the deliberate act of stepping away from constant connectivity.
