Activists Abroad Push Gaza Protest Aimed at Ousting Hamas
A social media campaign led by former Gaza residents and other activists living outside the Strip is trying to mobilize a mass protest against Hamas rule on June 26. According to Kan News, the organizers want people to flood the streets and demand that Hamas step aside from governing Gaza.
The activists are deliberately tapping into anger over poverty, unemployment, and destruction caused by the war, turning those grievances into political pressure. They are also calling on Hamas to leave the civilian and political arena and are demanding basic rights for residents, including jobs, education, health care, and security.
Hamas, meanwhile, is trying to prevent the protest from gaining momentum by instructing its security forces not to engage directly with demonstrators. The group’s media apparatus is also seeking to blame Israel for the situation.
There is additionally concern that Hamas may carry out executions of alleged “collaborators” on the eve of the protest to spread fear and reduce turnout in the streets.
