IDF Officer Severely Wounded in Gaza Returns to Surfing
Tamir Dudi, a 26-year-old IDF officer, who sustained life-altering injuries during combat in Gaza, is now training for the World Surfing Championship in California this November. Dudi, who lost an arm and suffers from severe leg pain, aims to stand on the podium, symbolizing his triumph over adversity.
Dudi was serving as a lieutenant in the Nahal Brigade on October 7th, participating in battles in the Gaza envelope, including rescuing survivors from the Nova music festival. On January 16th, 2024, during a battle in Jabalia, his team was attacked by terrorists emerging from a tunnel. Dudi was hit by shrapnel from three grenades and shot in the leg. His team managed to pull him to safety, saving his life. He was evacuated to Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center and underwent 17 surgeries in Israel, the US, and Austria for severe nerve damage to his leg and arm.
After a year and a half of hospitalization and rehabilitation, Dudi decided to have his arm amputated on September 30th, 2024, after medical opinions indicated it would not recover. He described the amputation, which occurred on the eve of Yom Kippur, as a moment where he smiled, believing he would find a way forward.
Driven by his passion for surfing, Dudi began training at Surf ParkTLV, a facility with a special wave pool. He was told by coach Daniel Sigura that he had the potential to go far. Dudi committed to training 3-4 times a week, eventually traveling to a training camp in California. He stated that surfing has become the center of his life, providing him with a reason to get up each day and a form of healing.
Dudi, originally from Holon, also found personal happiness, marrying his wife, Nov, whom he met while searching for an apartment in Jerusalem. He is now considered a significant prospect in surfing, with surfwear company Billabong and surf equipment company Ultra Wave sponsoring him. Dudi expressed his willingness to fight for Israel again and hopes to stand on the podium at the World Championship, after which he plans to study psychology and hopes to become a father.
