Former West Midlands Police Chief Investigated Over Ban on Maccabi Tel Aviv Fans

The story · English

A formal investigation has been launched against Craig Gilford, the former chief of West Midlands Police, along with three other officers and a staff member, regarding their handling of the decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from attending a Europa League match against Aston Villa in November. The local Birmingham police had pushed to prevent the Israeli fans from entering the stadium, citing "high security risks," a move that sparked diplomatic tensions between Jerusalem and London and drew sharp criticism from Jewish community leaders accusing the police of spreading misinformation and bias.

The match proceeded with an empty away section, and outside the stadium, clashes occurred between pro-Palestinian activists and pro-Israel protesters, resulting in 11 arrests. Gilford was forced to step down prematurely in January after the UK Home Secretary publicly expressed a loss of confidence in his leadership following initial findings of serious management failures.

Derek Campbell, from the oversight body, stated that extensive evidence review indicated clear breaches of police administrative protocols, potentially leading to disciplinary actions. Initially, the police defended their decision by citing up-to-date intelligence assessments. However, an independent inquiry revealed that the threat level posed by the Israeli fans was significantly exaggerated, based on incorrect data, some mistakenly sourced from AI chat tools, and that the police completely neglected to engage with the Jewish community in England for dialogue and coordination.
