Global Energy Crisis Deepens Amid Middle East Conflicts and Supply Disruptions

The story · English

Six months into the "Roaring Lion" war against Iran, the global energy crisis continues to worsen, with nearly half of the world's oil supply now coming from conflict-affected countries. According to Reuters calculations based on 2025 production data, about 45 million barrels per day, over 43% of global supply, originate from regions embroiled in violent disputes. The crisis began roughly six months ago when US and Israeli attacks on Iran triggered the largest oil supply disruption in history, with no resolution in sight.

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has further reduced oil production and refining capacity, a trend that has expanded into neighboring Kazakhstan this year. Additional pressure comes from the prolonged conflict in Libya and US-imposed restrictions on Venezuelan oil exports earlier this year. Analysts estimate that current disruptions in the Gulf region, including secretive oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and attacks near the Red Sea and Suez Canal in July, have cut supply by 5 to 7 million barrels per day.

These conflicts have also severely damaged global refining capacity, with Ukraine targeting much of Russia's refining infrastructure, including facilities as far as 2,700 kilometers from Ukrainian-controlled areas. Russia now faces a severe domestic fuel shortage and has banned all gasoline and diesel exports, tightening international markets further.

Economically, soaring fuel prices have become a key driver of global inflation, increased borrowing costs, and contributed to the US national debt reaching a historic $40 trillion. Diesel prices in the US have hit unprecedented highs despite refineries operating at full capacity. The International Energy Agency has released record amounts of oil from emergency reserves to mitigate supply shocks, but most of these reserves are now depleted as global oil stocks continue to shrink.
