Secular, Haredi, and Bedouin Women Unite to Promote Gender Equality in Israeli Politics

The story · English

Four years ago, Yael Yachieli founded the 50:50 initiative to promote equal gender representation in Israeli decision-making bodies after noticing a decline in the number of female Knesset members, ministers, and CEOs. The initiative advocates for equal numbers of women and men at conferences, award recipients, and political decision-making tables, emphasizing that women's representation transcends political, ethnic, or religious affiliations. Yachieli highlights the main obstacles as societal perceptions that the current male-dominated status quo is natural and the misconception that women's representation is solely a women's issue rather than a democratic quality concern. Despite slow progress, she notes encouraging signs as more political leaders gradually support gender parity.

Joining Yachieli are Haredi activist Feini Sukenik and Bedouin feminist Hanan Al-Sanae, who work within their communities to encourage women's public participation and raise awareness among politicians. Sukenik, who leads the "B'asher Telchi" organization supporting religious women through divorce and social change, stresses the social and professional costs women face in the Haredi community when breaking traditional gender roles. She celebrates the recent success of the Haredi women's primaries, which showcased many qualified women, challenging the narrative that suitable female candidates do not exist.

Al-Sanae, a human rights lawyer and co-CEO of "Itach-Maaki," rejects cultural excuses for low female political participation in Arab society, pointing to systemic barriers within political parties and institutions. She recalls overcoming skepticism about Jewish-Arab cooperation after October 7 and emphasizes the importance of women supporting each other in public spaces. All three activists urge women to engage actively in politics, not only by voting but by demanding accountability from parties regarding women's representation and supporting female candidates.

Together, these secular, Haredi, and Bedouin women exemplify a cross-cultural coalition striving to transform Israeli politics through persistent advocacy for gender equality, despite ongoing challenges and resistance.
