Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef Reveals Hardships of Yeshiva Student in Military Prison Amid Arrest Wave

Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, Israel's Sephardic Chief Rabbi, addressed the recent arrests of yeshiva students during his weekly lesson at the Hezyadim synagogue in Jerusalem. He recounted the story of a yeshiva student detained in a military prison who endured severe spiritual distress. The student was forced to watch television constantly, despite pleading with the guards, saying, "I am a Torah student, why are you showing television?" His requests were ignored, and he felt coerced.

This statement comes amid a surge in arrests of ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students in recent days. Notable cases include Israel Gochfi, a student from Kfar Hassidim yeshiva, who was arrested in Haifa after a dispute with a public transport inspector over a Rav-Kav card malfunction and handed over to the military police. Another detainee was Moshe Steiner, a student from the Kibbutz yeshiva in Beit Meir, arrested over the weekend. These arrests have sparked protests and roadblocks by the extremist faction of the Jerusalem Faction (Neturei Karta).

At the recent Shas party election conference, Rabbi Yosef vowed that after the elections, representatives would work to regulate the status of yeshiva students amid ongoing struggles over their military conscription. He acknowledged the emotional toll on families and the community, citing the late Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's dedication to yeshiva students. Rabbi Yosef emphasized the need for strength to address these challenges and expressed love for all Israelis, including soldiers.

The Chief Rabbi’s remarks highlight the tension between the ultra-Orthodox community and the Israeli military regarding conscription policies and the spiritual impact on detained yeshiva students.
