US Navy Unveils AIM-494 Malice Long-Range Air-to-Air Missile Capable of Striking Targets 500 km Away

The United States Navy has revealed the AIM-494 Malice, a new long-range air-to-air missile capable of engaging enemy aircraft from over 463 kilometers (250 nautical miles) away. Developed by Raytheon, this radar-guided missile features advanced rocket propulsion and high speed, with many technical details still classified. The missile is designed to provide US carrier-based pilots the ability to destroy hostile fighter jets, reconnaissance planes, and refueling aircraft from a significant distance, enhancing capabilities especially against Chinese air and naval forces in scenarios such as defending Taiwan.

This development comes after concerns that the US had lost its edge in air-to-air missile technology, highlighted by Pakistan's use of a Chinese missile to down an Indian fighter jet at 200 kilometers, surpassing the range of American AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles. The Malice missile's range exceeds the radar range of fighter jets, suggesting it can be launched using targeting data from other platforms such as ships, airborne early warning aircraft, or future US space-based radar networks.

Images released by the US Navy show F/A-18 fighters carrying four Malice missiles externally and F-35 jets equipped with one missile in their internal weapons bay, preserving stealth capabilities. The missile's price has not been disclosed but is expected to exceed one million dollars per unit. Israel, which has traditionally procured radar-guided air-to-air missiles from the US, may consider acquiring the Malice for its F-35, F-15, and possibly F-16 fighter jets. Operational scenarios in the Middle East could see the missile used to engage enemy aircraft from safe distances, such as intercepting hostile jets flying over southern Turkey from northern Israeli airspace.

The introduction of the AIM-494 Malice represents a significant leap in US air combat capabilities, aiming to counterbalance China's growing investment in stealth fighters and bombers and maintain US dominance in aerial warfare.
