Greece Deploys Patriot Air Defense Battery to Crete Amid Iranian Threats

Greece transferred a Patriot air defense battery overnight from the island of Karpathos to Crete to strengthen defenses around Suda Bay in northwestern Crete. The battery, along with its crew and equipment, was redeployed near the military base in Suda, a strategically important area. This move follows recent threats from senior Iranian officials warning of potential attacks on American bases in Europe, prompting heightened alertness in the Greek military.

Iran is believed to still possess a significant number of ballistic missiles with ranges exceeding 2,000 kilometers, putting targets in southeastern Europe within reach. The Patriot battery was initially stationed on Karpathos in March as part of Greece's efforts to bolster its ballistic missile defense capabilities. Greece is also reportedly coordinating with the United States and Israel to assess potential threats to facilities in Greece and Cyprus.

Additionally, Athens is considering providing support to Bulgaria's air defense system if Sofia formally requests assistance. This comes after Bulgaria recently relocated two US KC-135 refueling aircraft from its Bezmer base following Iranian threats against American assets in Europe. Bulgaria had approved the deployment of these aircraft a month earlier, emphasizing their use for training missions within allied airspace rather than combat operations against Iran. Iran condemned the presence of US military aircraft in Bulgaria, accusing the country of complicity in aggression and war crimes.

The security cooperation between Greece and Israel has been noted previously, especially amid tensions with Turkey. The redeployment of the Patriot battery to Crete underscores Greece's ongoing efforts to enhance regional defense amid escalating geopolitical risks linked to Iran's missile capabilities and threats.
