Israel Committee Warns of Possible Collapse in Mitzpe Ramon Over Annual Deficit

The Knesset Interior and Environment Committee held a follow-up hearing on Monday about the financial crisis facing the local council of Mitzpe Ramon. According to the municipality, it is running an annual deficit of 15 million shekels, with no government solution yet in sight despite ongoing development in the town.

Committee chair MK Yitzhak Kreuzer sharply criticized government ministries and demanded an immediate fix. “This authority needs money, and it cannot live hand to mouth all the time, that does not work,” he said, adding, “We will not allow Mitzpe Ramon to collapse.” He also pressed for clear deadlines.

Mitzpe Ramon council head Elia Winter described efforts to strengthen the local economy through entrepreneurs, new hotels, solar energy and tourism, but said these are long-term drivers that will only bear fruit in about three years. He said he has no way to cover the deficit each year and “cannot survive the coming years.” Winter added that he has had to choose between paying teachers’ salaries and renovating toilets at an elementary school.

Sigit Yifrach, deputy director of the Southern District at the Construction and Housing Ministry, warned that there is a gap between the huge investments and the municipality’s operating capacity, saying that without an immediate solution, “all the financial investments being made now for the coming years will go to waste.” An official from the Finance Ministry’s budget department, Elkana Ritalin, said many local authorities are in a worse situation. Ministry of Interior representative Avshalom Shlomov said Mitzpe Ramon is being run responsibly and that the problem has been known for years, but that the available tools are limited and current grants “are not enough.”
