WHO Highlights Six Key Lifestyle Changes to Reduce Dementia Risk

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently updated guidelines emphasizing that dementia is not an inevitable part of aging but can be significantly influenced by modifiable risk factors. Currently, over 57 million people worldwide live with dementia, with nearly 10 million new cases each year. Dementia encompasses various brain disorders affecting memory and daily functioning, with Alzheimer's disease accounting for 60%-70% of cases. Since no cure exists, prevention and risk reduction are critical.

According to Professor Michael Davidson, chair of the Israeli Medical Center for Alzheimer's, up to 45% of dementia risk is attributable to changeable factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, social isolation, air pollution, and chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes. The WHO stresses a combined approach over a single "miracle cure," recommending lifelong interventions including regular exercise, cardiovascular and metabolic health management, smoking cessation, and hearing and vision care.

Hearing loss, often overlooked, is linked to social isolation and increased cognitive decline risk. The guidelines suggest offering hearing aids to adults with hearing impairment as a preventive measure. Dr. Nati Blum, CEO of the Israeli Alzheimer's Association, highlights that untreated hearing loss contributes to loneliness and communication difficulties, which exacerbate cognitive decline. Vision impairment is also recognized as a modifiable risk factor.

Environmental factors like reducing air pollution exposure are newly emphasized. Cognitive stimulation and social engagement are encouraged for both cognitively healthy adults and those with mild cognitive impairment. The POINTER clinical trial demonstrated cognitive improvements from combined lifestyle interventions, including exercise, a Mediterranean-DASH diet, and social activities.

The WHO does not recommend routine vitamin supplementation for dementia prevention without diagnosed deficiencies, focusing instead on overall health and risk factor management. Early intervention is crucial, as risk accumulates over a lifetime. Experts warn against oversimplifying brain health to puzzles or memory games alone, stressing comprehensive care including medical treatment, social support, and lifestyle changes.

Early diagnosis and reducing stigma are vital for effective management and planning. Dementia imposes significant personal and economic burdens, costing the global economy approximately $1.3 trillion annually. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that these guidelines translate current knowledge into actionable steps to better protect brain health worldwide.
