Israeli Study Explores Personalized Programs to Reverse Biological Aging in Adults Over 50

The story · English

A pioneering Israeli study at Sheba Medical Center's Longevity Center is investigating whether personalized health programs can slow or even reverse biological aging in adults aged 50 and above. The SHARP (Sheba Healthspan Research Population) trial is a 12-month randomized controlled study assessing if tailored interventions based on comprehensive medical evaluations can improve biological, physical, and cognitive markers related to aging.

Biological age differs from chronological age by reflecting how well the body's systems function, which can vary widely among individuals of the same calendar age. The SHARP study uses a broad range of measurements including blood tests, metabolic and inflammatory markers, cardiovascular function, muscle strength, cognitive performance, and epigenetic clocks based on DNA methylation to assess aging.

Participants undergo a detailed multisystem evaluation covering cardiovascular health, lifestyle habits, mental health, sleep, sensory function, metabolism, muscle strength, and aging-related metrics. Based on these findings, each receives a personalized health plan targeting their specific aging risk factors, such as physical inactivity, poor sleep, metabolic issues, or social isolation. Follow-up assessments occur at six and twelve months to track changes.

Previous research from Sheba showed that a higher biological age relative to chronological age correlates with increased mortality and hospitalization risks, underscoring the importance of reducing this gap. The SHARP study aims to determine if interventions can effectively lower biological age and improve meaningful health outcomes like strength, balance, cognition, and independence.

The research also highlights the potential benefits of implementing such programs in assisted living and nursing home settings, where integrated lifestyle and medical management could prevent decline before disease onset. Early SHARP data using AI-based cardiovascular ultrasound to measure biological age show promise in assessing aging of specific organ systems, which may enable more precise preventive care.

While final results on whether the personalized program reduces biological age are pending, the study represents a shift from reactive medicine to proactive aging management. The ultimate goal is to provide older adults with individualized aging profiles and interventions that extend healthy, independent years rather than merely prolonging lifespan. This approach could inform future healthcare protocols and community programs for aging populations worldwide.
