Experts Advise Cautious Skin Care for Acne and Pigmentation as Israeli Summer Ends

As summer wanes in Israel but the sun remains strong, many experience worsening acne and pigmentation due to prolonged UV exposure, heat, and sweat. Dermatologist Dr. Sivan Mercer explains that the common belief that sun dries out acne is a misconception; instead, summer conditions like heat, humidity, and increased sebum production can exacerbate breakouts. Additionally, fading tans reveal post-inflammatory pigmentation, making acne appear more severe.

Acne treatments must be tailored by age and skin type. For adolescents, hormonal changes often drive acne, while adult women may face hormonal components or unsuitable skincare products. Dr. Mercer emphasizes avoiding aggressive drying treatments that damage the skin barrier, advocating for gentle care and sun protection when using active ingredients like retinoids or azelaic acid. Patience and avoiding picking at lesions are crucial to prevent scarring and pigmentation.

Regarding pigmentation, dermatologist Dr. Ela Agozi highlights the importance of identifying the type of hyperpigmentation before treatment. She stresses daily sun protection, including mineral sunscreens and antioxidants, and avoiding further tanning. Clinic treatments such as mild chemical peels, IPL, and non-peeling laser therapies can begin in late summer if sun exposure is controlled. However, aggressive procedures like fractional lasers or deep peels should be postponed until cooler, less sunny months to avoid burns and worsening pigmentation.

Both experts agree that managing skin conditions at summer's end requires a balanced approach that protects the skin barrier, avoids irritation, and incorporates professional guidance. This strategy ensures effective treatment outcomes and healthier skin texture over time.
