Netanyahu’s Decision to Halve US Military Aid Could Cost IDF Billions Amid Budget Strains

The story · English

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a controversial decision last year to accept only half of the potential US military aid package for the coming decade, despite the Trump administration’s willingness to approve a full-scale agreement. Israeli officials working closely with the US government believe this choice effectively blocked a more generous aid deal, leaving Israel to cover the shortfall itself. This decision comes at a time when the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) face significant financial and personnel challenges.

The cost of maintaining the IDF’s extensive operations is enormous. A single month of reservist duty recently cost about 2.1 billion shekels, equivalent to the price of seven F-35 fighter jets or 70 Merkava tanks. The military is stretched thin, with multiple brigades deployed along the Gaza border and Lebanon, alongside rapid response units and active reservists. While the large troop presence aims to reassure border communities, some question whether such a massive force is necessary given the geographic buffer zones.

Beyond financial strain, the prolonged conflict has deeply affected soldiers and their families. A recent IDF survey found that 75% of families experienced significant lifestyle changes due to military service. Although over half of spouses support continued service, only 10% feel it allows them to invest in their own careers. With reduced urgency and tension, the IDF risks losing many skilled personnel, as some career soldiers seek less demanding roles or early retirement.

The military’s budget constraints, combined with Netanyahu’s aid decision, underscore the need for the IDF to downsize forces to preserve resources and personnel welfare. The government and military leadership face tough choices ahead to balance security demands with sustainable funding and troop retention.
